Looking up at night to Cologne's main Christmas tree blanketed in fairy lights next to the twin spires of the Dom as it snows.

2009-2015

We first visited Cologne back in 2006, returning in 2009, and every year since. If you want to know why check out Janis's post 'Bratwurst & Baubles, Cologne at Christmas' - It's also got some additional images there too!

As you can probably gather we Cologne.

Hopefully this gallery has given you an idea of why.

The technical bits

Well this is a mixed bag! Back in 2006 I took my Canon EOS 1D MkII N and took a lousy 4 shots - I was probably overwhelmed by the markets. By 2009 I had upgraded to my Canon EOS 1Ds MkIII and brought along the 16-35mm, 24-70mm, both f/2.8L and the 50mm F/1.2L. I brought the same kit again in 2010, however in 2011 & 2012 I swapped to the Canon Powershot G12 as it was more portable. 2013 & 2014, I went even smaller and relied on the iPhone. 2015 saw the Canon EOS 1Ds MkIII return, married to the 24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM for convenience.

However the image was captured, it has been into imported into Lightroom, and stored on my NAS Device .

The images have either been wholly processed in Lightroom, or have had further work completed in Adobe Photoshop, with some having Google's Nik Filters applied from within Photoshop too. If you have any questions about any of the images or the workflows then feel free to comment.

Inspired to visit Cologne for the Christmas markets?

I hope these images have inspired you to make that trip.
